Addressing the crime of enforced disappearances

Iraq's national human rights institution has met with the United Nations Assistance Mission to Iraq (UNAMI) to discuss their joint efforts to address enforced disappearances in the country.

Assistant Professor Dr Anas Akram Mohammed, member of the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR), met with Dardman Joshi, Assistant Director of UNAMI's Human Rights Office, on 30 May 2019.

The meeting discussed the efforts of the Office of the High Commissioner to prepare a draft law on the crime of enforced disappearances, along with governmental measures to implement the obligations of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.

In addition, the meeting reviewed the Commission's mechanisms to document and verify allegations of enforced disappearance, especially in provinces liberated from the control of the terrorist organization Daesh, and the level of cooperation with the judiciary in those provinces.

Both organisations highlighted the value of ongoing cooperation between their offices to better coordinate efforts and find the appropriate grounds to address these issues.
