The APF will embark on a three-year program of support for NHRIs in the Pacific, supported by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The APF is set to embark on a three-year program of support for national human rights institutions (NHRIs) in the Pacific, with the support of New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

Staff and leaders of existing NHRIs in the region – Fiji, Samoa and Tuvalu – will take part in activities tailored to meet the needs of their institutions and the communities they serve.

"We know the powerful difference that strong NHRIs can make in their communities," said APF Development Manager Thuy Doan-Smith.

"For example, the national inquiry into family violence by Samoa's NHRI has transformed how people think and talk about the issue in that country," she said.

"Our goal is to support NHRIs in the Pacific in their work to bring about long-term change and improve outcomes for people, especially for vulnerable groups."

We are very grateful to have MFAT as a partner. They share our vision to help create an Asia Pacific where all people can enjoy their human rights.

Another priority of the APF is to support the establishment of NHRIs in other Pacific Island nations.

This includes undertaking scoping visits to discuss the role and value of NHRIs, as well as the different models of NHRI that may be appropriate for the country, through to providing assistance with drafting legislation so the NHRI complies with the Paris Principles.

"With the support of MFAT, we are well placed to provide governments with the practical assistance they need to establish an independent NHRI," Ms Doan-Smith said.

In addition to supporting the APF's efforts in the Pacific, MFAT will provide funding over three years to assist the APF in its work with NHRIs across the entire Asia Pacific region.

"We are very grateful to have MFAT as a partner. They share our vision to help create an Asia Pacific where all people can enjoy their human rights."
