With COVID-19 restricting travel between countries, the APF is taking steps to support national human rights institutions (NHRIs) in the region by publishing a suite of online resources and training courses.

The APF's 'digital first' strategy includes transitioning to online learning on EdApp and developing new collaboration spaces in online communities.

It will also include the development of self-directed learning courses, case studies, guidelines, and audio-visual materials, as well as piloting remote coaching and mentoring for staff of NHRIs.

Our goal is to provide different approaches that recognise the different ways people learn and the time constraints they face.

"It is unlikely we will be in a position to host regional events or national-level workshops before the middle of next year," Kate Turner-Mann, APF Manager of Capacity Development, said.

"However, we want to ensure that NHRI staff and Commissioners have access to information, resources and support that can help them in their work and to strengthen their organisations," she said.

Ms Turner Mann said the APF's 'digital first' approach reflected changes in adult-centred learning.

"In recent years, the landscape for online learning has shifted rapidly," she said.

"Our goal is to provide different approaches that recognise the different ways people learn and the time constraints they face."

The APF will develop a number of self-facilitated courses on the functions of an NHRI, operational areas or thematic issues.

The courses can be completed in a short space of time, will be available in 'offline' mode and will be easily accessible on mobile devices. '

A learning community will be established for each course, allowing people to reach out to course facilitators and other participants, share examples of their work or discuss shared projects.

Participants will also have access to a wide range of electronic resources.

Ms Turner-Mann said the self-facilitated courses will be available by the end of 2020.
