Commission backs efforts on family and sexual violence

The New Zealand Human Rights Commission has endorsed the Government’s new approach to responding to family and sexual violence.

The New Zealand Human Rights Commission has welcomed the Government's launch of a significant new work program to ensure its agencies respond better to family and sexual violence.

"We have a real opportunity to lead the world in preventing and reducing harm from family and sexual violence," said Human Rights Commissioner Jackie Blue.

"We need clear, strong and committed leadership from the top, as well as a cross-government approach and community mobilisation."

Justice Minister Amy Adams and Social Development Minister Anne Tolley launched the new work program that focuses on developing a whole of government strategy to tackle existing problems and focus on victim outcomes.

"Sector experts have long said that the current system is fragmented, with gaps and duplications," said Dr Blue.

"Many survivors struggle to access services with government agencies tending to work in silos. However, this new plan of work aims to begin to address these problems."
