G20 leaders urged to take stock of human rights

الجرافيك 2014 G20 Leaders’ Summit

The international coalition of NHRIs presented a series of recommendations to the leaders of the world’s major economies in the lead-up to the G20.

In the lead-up to the 2014 G20 Leaders' Summit, the international coalition of national human rights institutions (NHRIs) has called for human rights outcomes to be given the same prominence as economic outcomes in this year's deliberations.

The communiqué submitted by the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions (ICC) noted that "G20 actions and decisions have significant impacts on the realization and enjoyment of human rights across the world".

"The 2014 G20 Leaders' Summit therefore provides an important opportunity for global leaders to agree to practical actions that have a positive impact not just on economic growth but on the promotion and protection of human rights," the ICC said.

The ICC welcomed the G20's two key themes of this year's meeting: promoting stronger economic growth and employment outcomes, and making the global economy more resilient to deal with future shocks.

However, the communiqué noted that income inequality in OECD countries is now at its highest level in over 50 years, which can "place economic growth and political stability at risk".

"We encourage the G20 to recognize that inclusive growth is broader than income; it is about ensuring full participation of all segments of society in decision making processes and governance structures," the ICC said.

The ICC's communiqué included ten recommendations to promote inclusive growth; to tackle structural barriers to employment, especially those faced by women and young people; to strengthen taxation systems so they are efficient, effective and non-discriminatory; and to ensure that human rights are integrated into the process and substance of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

The ICC warmly welcomed the positive dialogue established by the G20 with civil society and other groups and called for opportunities for NHRIs to contribute their expertise to these discussions.

"NHRIs have extensive experience of promoting greater understanding, awareness and respect for human rights among all those involved in sustainable and inclusive development including governments, international organisations or private actors," the ICC said.

"NHRIs should therefore be considered as important partners in strengthening economies and delivering balanced and inclusive growth."
