ICHR condemns shelling of its Gaza headquarters

One staff member was injured when the Commission's office was struck by shelling.

On 12 November 2019, the headquarters of the Independent Commission for Human Rights in the Gaza Strip – which occupies the fifth, sixth and seventh floors of a building in the centre of Gaza City – was hit by shelling.

Mr Bahjat Al-Helu, ICHR's Coordinator of Awareness and Training in the Gaza Strip, was slightly injured from the attack, the ICHR said in a statement.

It was fortunate that ICHR staff had just left that part of the building, otherwise they would have been hit, the statement said.

The ICHR condemned the attack on its office in Gaza City and called for "an urgent international intervention and investigation at the highest level".

Targeting human rights institutions in this way sets a dangerous precedent, the statement added.

The ICHR said it will continue its work to promote and protect human rights and will follow up the bombing of its headquarters with relevant international and judicial bodies.
