The Human Rights Commission of Australia has been elected APF Chairperson and will lead the new APF Governance Committee for the next two years.

Australia will be joined on the five-member APF Governance Committee by the NHRIs of Mongolia (Deputy Chairperson), India, Jordan and Qatar. All representatives on the Governance Committee were elected for a two- year period.

The election of the Governance Committee was one of a number of decisions taken by Forum Councillors at the APF's 23rd Annual Meeting, held in Hong Kong from 18-19 September 2018.

Other decisions included:

  • Welcoming the Ombudsman of the Kyrgyz Republic as an 'B status' member of the APF
  • Electing the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar to be the APF's nomination for Secretary of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) from March 2019
  • Electing the NHRIs of Australia, Jordan and Qatar to join India as the Asia Pacific region's representatives on the GANHRI Bureau
  • Electing Human Rights Commission of New Zealand to be the Asia Pacific region's 'alternate' member on the GANHRI Subcommittee on Accreditation, should one be required.

In addition, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea was elected to host the APF's 24th Annual Meeting and Biennial Conference in 2019.

The Annual Meeting was an opportunity for APF members, along with representatives from the NHRIs of Fiji and Tuvalu, to share an overview of their current activities and achievements.

The second day of the meeting included an open dialogue with civil society organisations in the region on issues including the shrinking space for civil society, foreign contribution laws, the situation of human rights defenders and a need for the APF and ANNI to revise the current dialogue arrangements.

Immediately following the Annual Meeting, APF members took part in the Conference on Equality in the Asia Pacific 2018: Progress and Challenges, hosted by the APF in partnership with the Hong Kong Equal Opportunity Commission.

Date: 24 September 2018
