NHRC forms investigation team on killings

الجرافيك Commission Chairperson Kazi Reazul Hoque

The National Human Rights Commission has condemned the attacks that killed seven people in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The National Human Rights Commission has condemned gun attacks that killed seven people, including four United Peoples' Democratic Front-backed organisation activists, New Age Bangladesh reported.

It has also formed a three-member fact-finding committee, led by NHRC member Nurun Nahar Osmani, to investigate the killings and submit a report in 10 working days.

Commission Chairperson Kazi Reazul Hoque expressed serious concern over the murders in Khagrachari and said that the administration had to be more vigilant to ensure peace in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

He stressed the need for proper steps to stop recurrence of any such incident.

The Chittagong Hill Tracts Commission condemned the murders and said that an environment of impunity was contributing to an increase in the scale of crimes in the hills.

Both the commissions, in separate statements, urged the government to ensure proper and neutral investigation into the incidents, identify the perpetrators and ensure they are brought to justice.

Seven people, including four Chittagong Hill Tracts-based political party United Peoples' Democratic Front-backed organisation leaders, were killed and 10 others were injured in gun attacks on them at two places in Khagrachari on Saturday 18 August.

Media reports state that at least 22 leaders and activists associated with Chittagong Hill Tracts organisations have been murdered since May, allegedly by their rivals.
