The Commission has urged the Government to implement a draft national action plan on indigenous peoples and their right to decent work.

The National Human Rights Commission of Nepal (NHRC) has urged the Government to implement a draft national action plan on indigenous peoples and their right to decent work.

Nepal ratified ILO Convention 169 on 14 September 2007 but there has been little meaningful progress in the decade since, the Commission said in a statement.

"The Commission urges the government to be serious for the protection of indigenous peoples' rights in an effective manner," the statement said.

"Similarly, the Commission also draws the attention of the Government to amend domestic laws in accordance with ILO 169 and ensure the rights of indigenous peoples."

The NHRC organised a discussion on the 'Draft of ILO Convention 169 Implementation National Action Plan' to mark the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, with representatives from various government authorities, indigenous human rights defenders and parliamentarians.

Commissioner Mohna Ansari said the program was designed to evaluate the extent to which Nepal's domestic laws reflect the Government's commitments on human rights issues.

NHRC Chairperson Justice Anup Raj Sharma said it was vital that the draft action plan be implemented.

In keeping with the theme for International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, Justice Sharma urged authorities to respect the right of indigenous people to be educated in their mother tongue.
