NHRI recognises work of human rights activist

الجرافيك Activist Sorour Al-Hassani receives the IHCHR 'Shield of Human Rights'

Activist Sorour Al-Hassani formed a voluntary humanitarian team to pull out bodies from the vicinity of the old city of Mosul.

The Board of the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights, in coordination with the IHCHR office in Nineveh, has presented its 'Shield of Human Rights' to Mosul civil society activist Sorour Al-Hassani.

Speaking to ICHR staff, Al Hassani described her humanitarian work to form a voluntary team to pull out bodies from the vicinity of the old city of Mosul.

Al-Hassani indicated that, over the course of several months in 2017-18, she and members of her group pulled out more than 1,000 bodies, at a rate of between 12 and 40 bodies each day.

The bodies were buried in a private cemetery in the western district of Al-Sahaqi.

In response to her volunteer work, and her service to the people of her province, Al-Hassani was harassed by the local government in Nineveh and had a lawsuit filed against her.

The lawsuit was subsequently rejected by the Misdemeanor Court, after civil society activists and volunteer lawyers defended her, and all charges against Al-Hassani were dropped.

In appreciation of her exceptional humanitarian efforts, Mr. Oday Al-Manawi, Field Coordinator of the Human Rights Defenders Program, presented her with the 'Shield of Human Rights' and expressed the IHCHR's support to stand alongside her and other human rights defenders.
