Open hearing responds to complaints of rights violations

Fifty four cases were heard in the Open Hearing in three benches, presided over by the NHRC Chairperson and Commission members.

The National Human Rights Commission has concluded its Open Hearing and Camp Sitting in Raipur by recommending payment of Rs. 54 lakh (USD 75,000) as relief in cases of atrocities related to the rights violation of people belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities in Chhattisgarh.

During the hearing of 54 cases, State government officers informed the Commission that Rs.12.90 lakhs had already been paid in some cases, in response to recommendations of the Commission

54 cases were heard in the Open Hearing in three benches presided over by the NHRC Chairperson Justice H.L. Dattu and Members Mrs. Jyotika Kalra and Dr. D.M. Mulay. Additional cases were heard in the Full Commission sitting.

Matters raised during the 'Open Hearing' included non-implementation of compensation to 35 women, as recommended by the Commission; non-implementation of healthcare facilities in Maoist affected districts of the State; air and water pollution; and rehabilitation of people rendered homeless on account of implementation of the mega project by NTPC.

During an interaction with local NGOs, participants raised issues of access to health care, issues affecting Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, as well as issues facing women, children and older persons.
