Sharing insights across the Asia Pacific

الجرافيك Representatives of the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh meet with the APF secretariat

A delegation from the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh visited Sydney to share their experiences with counterparts at Australia's NHRI.

Representatives from the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh, including its Chairperson, recently visited Sydney to share experiences with their counterparts at the Australian Human Rights Commission.

The two day program included meetings with the Commission's leadership team and briefings on the operations of the Australian Human Rights Commission, including its work in relation to age discrimination, race discrimination, complaint handling and engagement with LGBTI communities.

The delegation from the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh also met with the APF secretariat.

In Bangladesh, the National Human Rights Commission and civil society groups are working closely together to help bring about lasting change for vulnerable groups and those living on the margins of their communities.

NHRC Chairperson Kazi Reazul Hoque said that, as a new national human rights institution established in 2010, there was great value in meeting with and learning from other NHRIs in the region.

"For example, the Australian Human Rights Commission's structure of having a Commissioner dedicated under legislation to focus on certain areas – like race discrimination or disability discrimination – is very interesting," Mr Hoque said.

"In Bangladesh, we want to prepare legislation to ensure the human rights of all citizens of the country, all groups of people, so we are advocating for an anti-discrimination law," he said.

"This is something very important and I believe the Australian experience can add value to it."

The National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh has recently established new partnerships with civil society groups to assist it in its work with different groups, including women, children, indigenous peoples, people with disabilities and socially excluded communities.

"Bangladesh has a very vibrant civil society," Mr Hoque said.

"We get a lot of intellectual input from their side and we definitely consider that our partnership with civil society can accelerate our activity to reach the goal of better promoting and protecting human rights."
