National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) have a vital role to play in contributing to human rights policy-making at the regional level, says the APF's new project manager, Huong Tran.

"NHRIs hold the expertise in terms of implementing human rights treaties and monitoring what's happening on the ground," she said.

"I'm excited to be working directly with NHRIs and supporting them as they share their expertise with inter-governmental mechanisms in South East Asia and the Pacific."

Her role will focus on building ties between NHRIs and representatives of two key inter-governmental mechanisms (IGMs): the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights and the Pacific Islands Forum.

Unlike other regions of the world, the Asia Pacific does not have a region-wide human rights mechanism for addressing rights violations. Building relationships and links between organisations is therefore vital to addressing some of the key human rights issues facing the region.

With a background in law and international development, Huong has previously worked on access to justice and human rights projects in the Asia Pacific region.

Her past roles include advocating for women's human rights and the protection of human rights defenders and refugees in the Asia Pacific region. She has also advised and supported capacity development programs on environmental rights and climate change.

Most recently, Huong worked as a community lawyer to provide therapeutic and trauma-informed legal services.

In her new role with the APF, Huong is looking forward to working closely with the passionate and committed NHRI staff and Commissioners across the region.

"The APF has a long-standing reputation in facilitating cooperation and building strong relationships, not just with its member NHRIs, but with other bodies and mechanisms," she said.

"It's a real privilege to be able to build on the APF's work to explore further opportunities for engagement between NHRIs and IGMs and to support and strengthen these connections to address common human rights challenges."
