The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has initiated an immediate investigation into police treatment of students taking part in protest march.
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has initiated an immediate investigation into police treatment of students taking part in protest march in Colombo on Wednesday 29 October 2015.
The Colombo Telegraph reported that the students taking part in the protest organised by the Inter Student Collective for the Protection of Higher National Diploma in Accountancy (HNDA) were "brutally attacked" by police.
The students were on their way to the University Grants Commission in order to urge the authorities to return the HNDA to a degree status again.
In a statement on its website, the Commission "sees the incident as a broader issue concerning the manner in which the Police and Security Forces control civil demonstrations and the impact on the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly guaranteed by the Constitution of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka's international obligations".
