Iraq’s High Commission for Human Rights has condemned ongoing insecurity in Thi Qar Governorate.

Iraq's High Commission for Human Rights has condemned ongoing insecurity in Thi Qar Governorate, which has contributed to an escalation in violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

These clashes have resulted in the death of a member of the security forces, as well as injuries to 111 demonstrators and security forces from the use of live ammunition, stones and blades.

In a statement, the Commission warned that the continuing state of insecurity and the failure to address the underlying problems – as well as the failure of the government, security agencies and demonstrators to maintain security and safety – will lead to continuing chaos and further deaths and injuries.

In this context, the Commission renews its call for the Prime Minister to take over security arrangements in the governorate and take urgent measures to stop the bloodshed.
