Forty-six participants from 18 National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in the Asia Pacific region have completed a new APF online induction program.

Held from 15 April to 10 May 2024, the program supports newly appointed staff of APF member institutions in strengthening their understanding of human rights principles and the role, function, and mandate of NHRIs.

It also covers international human rights mechanisms, the Paris Principles, gender equality, and NHRI strategies for addressing a range of human rights issues.

The program features self-paced online learning and interactive components, delivered through the APF’s online learning platform, the APF Community. It is comprised of three separate courses: Introduction to Human Rights; Understanding NHRIs and the Paris Principles; and Gender Equality for NHRIs.

During the program, participants interacted with each other and facilitators in the APF Community, with three live interactive sessions held to share insights and experiences.

The modules were very effective for understanding the basic concepts and also broadening those basic ideas.

Following the course, participants have indicated that they plan to use the training content for internal staff development and to conduct various programs aligned with international human rights instruments and treaties. In relation to gender equality initiatives, participants said they aimed to strengthen gender considerations in their projects, train their staff, update policies, and make gender mainstreaming a regular practice.

Longer-term objectives include developing comprehensive strategies, establishing robust monitoring mechanisms, investing in research initiatives, and advocating for the rights of women and girls.

NHRIs interested in APF capacity development initiatives can contact Fasoha Aishath, Gender Equality and Capacity Development Manager: fasohaaishath@asiapacificforum.net and Nayela Akter, Project Officer: nayelaakter@asiapacificforum.net.
