In today’s globalised economy, the intersection of business operations and human rights has become increasingly critical. As companies expand across borders, the potential for human rights abuses—such as forced labour, environmental degradation, and exploitation of vulnerable communities—grows significantly.
Companies have a responsibility to respect human rights across their operations, supply chains, and broader sphere of influence. Responsible business conduct is crucial not only for protecting individuals and communities but also for promoting sustainable economic development.
The role of NHRIs
The corporate sector's expanding influence has made business and human rights a top priority for the UN, regional bodies, and National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs).
In 2008, Professor John Ruggie proposed a "protect, respect, and remedy" framework, leading to the 2011 UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. This framework emphasises the state's duty to protect, corporate responsibility to respect, and the necessity of access to effective remedies for victims.
NHRIs play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between international human rights standards and local realities. They serve as independent bodies that monitor, investigate, and report on human rights violations related to business practices, provide guidance to businesses and governments, and engage with affected communities.
By providing a platform for grievances to be heard and addressed, NHRIs work to ensure that business operations do not come at the expense of fundamental human rights.
A commitment to action
In May 2024, at the Annual Conference of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), APF members and NHRIs worldwide reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding human rights in business activities, focusing on climate change, digital technologies, and online civic space.
This collective effort highlights the crucial role NHRIs play in addressing environmental concerns and promoting human rights in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
