ICHR calls for urgent action in Gaza

The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) has issued an urgent call to NHRIs around the world, warning of a rapidly escalating humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.

The Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) has issued an urgent call to National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) worldwide, warning of a rapidly escalating humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.

For nearly two months, the Israeli-imposed blockade has effectively halted the entry of humanitarian aid, relief supplies, and basic necessities, leaving Gaza’s population of two million on the brink of famine. The humanitarian situation - already dire since October 7, 2023 - has now entered a state of total collapse.

Reports from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the World Food Programme confirm that children in Gaza are facing starvation and food reserves have been completely depleted. Vulnerable groups, including children, the sick, and the elderly, are dying from hunger and a lack of access to medical care.

In light of these developments, ICHR is calling on NHRIs around the world to:

  • Publicly condemn the use of starvation and collective punishment;
  • Urge their governments to fulfil their obligations under international law by lifting the blockade and facilitating humanitarian access;
  • Advocate for the protection of civilians and ensure aid reaches those in need;
  • Push for intensified diplomatic efforts to end military operations and alleviate suffering;
  • Support the creation of effective mechanisms to guarantee sustained humanitarian access.

ICHR underscores that immediate, coordinated international action is urgent and is a humanitarian imperative.
