The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) has released its most recent sub-committee on accreditation (SCA) report, outlining the recommendations arising from its February and March 2023 sessions.

Two APF members – the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines (CHR), and the Jordan National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) – were reaccredited as ‘A status’ institutions.

In its report from the session, the SCA acknowledged the efforts of the CHR to advocate for a stronger legal mandate through the CHR Charter Bill and was satisfied that the Commission was continuing to operate in full compliance with the Paris Principles.

The Jordan NCHR was subject to a special review at the session, with the SCA satisfied that the institution had responded adequately to its recommendations made in 2022 and should also be reaccredited as an ‘A status’ institution.

Also in the Asia Pacific, the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission received notice of a special review to take place in October 2023. The decision to initiate a special review followed the immediate entry into force of the amendments to the GANHRI Statute, which now establish a process for special review of ‘B status’ NHRIs.

The SCA deferred its review of the accreditation of the National Human Rights Commission of India for 12 months to provide the institution the opportunity to continue to advocate for amendments to its legal mandate, with a view to strengthening its compliance with the Paris Principles.

The APF will continue to support each NHRI to implement the recommendations made by the SCA to ensure compliance with the Paris Principles.
