Ombudsman of Uzbekistan
Establishment
The Institute of the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman) was established in 1995. At the eighth session of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan on April 24, 1997, the Law "On the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman)" was adopted.
According to the Law, the Authorized Person for Human Rights exercises powers independently of state bodies and officials and is accountable to the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The Authorized Person is elected by the Legislative Chamber and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for a term of five years.
Role and Functions
The role and function of the Ombudsman include:
- Complaints handling; considering and investigating complaints of human rights violations
- Recommending measures to remedy errors committed by individual organizations and officials
- International cooperation
- National Preventive Mechanism (NPM)
APF membership
The Ombudsman was admitted as an APF member in 2024.
