Strengthening leadership and collaboration: NHRC Leadership Retreat held in Nepal

Senior leaders from Nepal's NHRI gathered for a Leadership Dialogue Retreat facilitated by the APF, to strengthen leadership within the institution.

The APF facilitated a Leadership Dialogue Retreat for the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal (NHRC) to strengthen leadership within the institution and enhance internal collaboration.

Held in Lalitpur, Nepal, from 29–30 January, the retreat provided NHRC Commissioners with an opportunity to reflect on priorities, assess progress, and address institutional challenges.

The retreat followed a Capacity Assessment (CA) of the NHRC conducted in March 2024 by the APF in partnership with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The CA identified strategies for strengthening the Commission’s legal mandate, leadership structures, and internal processes. One key recommendation was to hold a Leadership Retreat to support governance, strategic planning, and advocacy efforts.

Facilitated by Pip Dargan, Principal Adviser, APF Leadership Services and Rosslyn Noonan, APF Expert NHRI Consultant, the retreat provided an invaluable opportunity for NHRC leaders to engage in open, honest discussions about their collective vision and the challenges they face.

"The retreat was an important step in strengthening the NHRC’s strategic direction and internal cohesion," said Ms Dargan.

Strong leadership is essential for NHRIs to be effective, independent, and responsive to human rights issues."
