Supporting effective leadership

Support for NHRI leaders

We are committed to supporting leaders of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) to achieve the highest standards of independence, accountability, and efficiency for their institutions. We offer a comprehensive range of services to strengthen the capacity of NHRI leaders, including:

APF Leadership Solidarity Outreach

The APF Leadership Solidarity Outreach Service offers regular virtual calls to support NHRI leaders. Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become a vital tool for engaging with Chairpersons and commission members, fostering strong institutional and professional connections. Due to its success, we are committed to continuing this valuable resource for NHRI leadership.

“Our focus at the APF is on equipping NHRI leaders with the tools and guidance they need to manage institutions that are truly committed to human rights, compliant with international standards, and capable of acting independently with integrity."

Pip Dargan, Principal Adviser, APF Leadership Services

Introduction to the APF Programme

This two-hour virtual session is designed for NHRIs interested in joining the APF or for newly appointed Commissioners of existing members. The Programme provides a concise overview of the APF’s role, services, and initiatives, including the High-Level Dialogue, and deepens understanding of key topics like the GANHRI accreditation process and other areas of APF support.

APF Virtual Dialogue Series

The APF Virtual Dialogue Series offers a regional platform for APF members and prospective members to exchange insights, share best practices, and discuss challenges in protecting human rights. These 90-minute sessions, co-facilitated by the APF and an NHRI, cover a range of human rights issues, such as monitoring detention centers during COVID-19, advancing vulnerable groups, disability rights, employment discrimination, pay equity, and the role of NHRIs in addressing climate change.

High-Level Dialogues

High-Level Dialogues (HLDs) are facilitated by the APF for newly appointed Chairpersons and/or commission members. These are comprehensive and confidential high-level discussions conducted over several days with NHRI experts and peers. HLDs cover a range of topics including thematic, strategic, and operational issues as well as a discussion on the governance.
