Assisting members with international accreditation

Accreditation support

To be effective and independent, NHRIs must operate in accordance with the Paris Principles.

APF members, along with NHRIs from the other three regions of the world, undergo a peer-based review process coordinated by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), through its Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA).

The accreditation process assesses compliance with the Paris Principles, the international minimum standards required by NHRIs to be independent, credible and effective.

The outcomes of accreditation affect GANHRI and APF membership status, as well as an NHRI’s ability to independently participate in the UN Human Rights Council’s work, serving as a crucial factor in bolstering their credibility.

We assist our members and new institutions throughout the accreditation process, providing guidance on preparing applications, interview readiness, and addressing the SCA’s post-session reports.

We also provide accreditation support to our members through the Annual Program on GANHRI Accreditation, a blended learning course designed for senior staff and leadership of NHRIs to prepare for the accreditation process and to familiarise them with the Paris Principles. The annual program aims to boost participants’ confidence in accreditation, improve outcomes for APF members, and promote knowledge exchange among NHRIs.
