Askar Shakirov has been re-elected to the position of the Commissioner for Human Rights during a plenary session of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan.

It was noted during the plenary session that Askar Shakirov had successfully performed the duties of the Commissioner for Human Rights and achieved significant results in the field of human rights protection.

His candidature was widely supported and his re-election to the position of Commissioner for Human Rights will preserve continuity in the work of the national human rights institution.

Within the framework of the last constitutional reform, the status of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights was officially enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the appointment of the Commissioner became the prerogative of the Upper House of the Parliament.
